Connecting to Analysis Services Tabular problems and questions

Background:

Cloud-based stand alone server (not a VM) with Windows Server 2019 and SQL Server Standard 2019.

On-premise Data GateWay is installed and working.

This server is not part of a domain.

In powerBi :

They are using O365  licences, including a PRO-Trial licence. The service is configured, and connections to SQLserver and Analysis services are OK.

The problem using PowerBi desktop:

Direct: We could not connect to the Analysis Services server because the connection timed out or the server name is incorrect

Import: We Couldn’t authenticate with the credentials provided.

Excel.  Works perfectly.

Questions:

  1. It seems the only way to make this work is for the server to be part of a  domain.   IS THAT TRUE?
  2. PowerBI  DataGateWay cannot be installed on a domain controller server. Is that true?   Note, if this is true I need 2 servers.
  3. Are there any workarounds?

Hey @Anonymous  when you try to load the server are you loading it with the db cube (optional) Database listed? If not give that a try.
