Confidentiality of data using Power BI free desktop version

Hi everyone,

When using Power BI free desktop version, how can I make sure that my proprietary data remains confidential? I read Microsoft's Power BI terms of service but I do not seem to find any clause that says that no-one - including Microsoft - will be using or exposing this data. Suddenly I do not feel so confident upoading my company's data in my free PowerBI desktop account. Can you help? Thank you!

Dear @20230938 ,

When using Power BI Desktop (Free version), your data remains local on your machine and is not automatically uploaded to the cloud unless you explicitly publish it to Power BI Service.

Microsoft’s terms indicate that they do not use or expose your data for purposes beyond providing the service, but the exact details on "no access" are not explicitly stated. Microsoft implements strong security measures and adheres to privacy laws like GDPR, but the responsibility for data confidentiality falls on you, especially if you decide to publish the data to the cloud.

To ensure confidentiality:

  • Keep data local and avoid publishing it to Power BI Service if you're concerned about exposing it.
  • If you must use the cloud, consider Power BI Pro or Premium for enhanced security features.
