Is there a way to take two semantic models and compare them for differences in applied steps? Kind of like you can compare two Word documents for changes?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hi @DPCCGF,
Thank you for reaching out in Microsoft Community Forum.
Please follow below steps for take two semantic models and compare them for differences in applied steps;
1.Please Use Tabular Editor to open both models and visually compare tables, measures, and M code (Tabular Editor 3 supports side-by-side diff).
2.Use ALM Toolkit to compare two Power BI datasets (published or local) and see detailed differences in schema and definitions.
3.Export models as .pbit or extract metadata to JSON, then compare using diff tools like WinMerge or Beyond Compare.
4.Try Power BI Helper to analyze and compare model metadata, including applied steps and dependencies.

Hi i can't find any documentation on using Tabular Editor 3 for comparison of two files, are you able to link me to anything?
My company does not allow ALM toolkit so I looking for a substitute.
Thanks 🙂
With TE3 you need to use your eyeballs to do the comparison.
Did the company give a reason for disallowing ALM Toolkit, but allowing TE3 ? I would have thought the other way round makes more sense.
You seem to be describing the Git integration features of Power BI with PBIR and TMDL options. Have you tried any of these?
Check out the November 2025 Power BI update to learn about new features.
