Change from import to direct query

I've been asked to change all my table souces from import to direct query mode.  I have found no recent responses or solutions.  Everything I found was old.  Any updates on this functionality?  Can it be done in the zip fle format?

Hi @lauriemclolo

You can use the TMDL view to do that. Be aware that the switch won't be successful if there are any applied steps that don't have a direct query equivalent.

Thank you; how does one become familiar with the steps that are not supported in direct query?

View Native Query is disabled when right clicking a query.

From a powerquery side, you want to make sure all your query folding. you can have a look at the docs surround direct query limitations https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/desktop-directquery-about

And the docs on query folding https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/desktop-directquery-about

You can change from import to direct query using TMDL view

You can only change fro direct query to import, not th eother way around.

That said, what do you mean "can it be done in the zip file format"? DirectQuery works only on Databases connection and only to SQL server and a few others

Best regards

Some edits can be done by converting pbix to .zip   Not this though.

Think he means pbip format. But TMDL view is sufficient
