Can we convert a .pbip to .pbix programmatically

The new developer mode in PowerBI desktop is a fantastic addition. We plan to use it extensively especially for the files in import mode, we would like to have the option to convert a .pbip (which is the format that git repos will hold) to a .pbix through DevOps pipelines.

From what I saw in the documentation this is not possible.

Does anybody have an idea of how we can make this happen (for example tabular editor, pbi-tools)?

Hi @vasotsich ,

Obviously the official documentation has given you the answer. The conversion of a .pbip file to a .pbix file is not directly possible through DevOps pipelines or any other tool.

You can only convert a PBIX into a PBIP and vice-versa using Power BI Desktop's File > Save as.

While you cannot yet convert from .pbix to .pbip programatically using programs like PBI tools, you can utilize microsoft fabric to connect to a git repository using Azure Dev Ops. This will allow you to convert all of the reports in your workspace to PBIPs without having to save all of them as .pbip files manually. To accomplish this, you simply have to connect your workspace to a git repository and sync the reports in your workspace with the repository.
