Hello Everyone!
First post, so please be gentle.
My apologies if this has been answered already, I did search and failed to find an answer that helped.
About 3 or 4 months back, I downloaded Power BI Desktop and created an account.
I did this in advance of the company I work for taking the decision to switch from a bespoke software solution to an ERP solution.
Everything was worked fine at the time, but I had to pause on doing anything because the wheels of business sometimes run slowly.
Fast forward to now and my company is evaluating ERP solutions, Dynamics 365 is one of them.
Because of this, I want to evaluate Power BI’s reporting capabilities again.
So, I’ve created a virtual machine running Ubuntu Linux and a developer version of SQL Server 2017.
From my Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) host OS, I can connect via Visual Studio 2018 and LINQPad just fine (if a little slowly).
However, when I try to connect via the Power BI desktop client, I get an “Unexpected Error” with the error message reading: “The name provided is not a properly formed account name.”
I’m not sure what name is being referred to, is it the Power BI account name or the SQL server account name?
Can anyone help with my problem please?
Best regards,
Beefy.

Hi @Beefheart,
Nomally, we have three ways of authentication to connect to SQL Server.
For your scenario, you should use the Database account.
In addition, you could have a reference of this similar thread.
