Calculation Group usage with all Visuals

I have seen and read about Calculation Groups. They are a great reusability feature of tabular models. However, I have only seen them used in a Matrix visual. I have situations such as a KPI or Card on which I want to show Sales for both Current Year and Prior Year. Can Calculation Groups be used on the Filter of such visuals to restrict the selected measure to a particular formula? I tried and am receiving an error, so thought I would ask before burning more cycles.

I have the same doubt as the topic creator. Is it possible to use Calculation groups for any kind of visual? I've only seen people using it on matrix.

I had to go a different route than using the Calculation Groups, so this was never resolved through the report. If I have the issue again, I will post more details.
