Hello guys,
I've got a built permission to build a new report from the existing data. I've some questions to clear out as I am new to Power BI. To pull the data, i logged into desktop and followed the steps Get Data and then Power BI datasets, please correct me if i am mistaken.
I see the data and only able to see Report View and Model View. In the model view, i see that there are some tables hidden and I am unable to unhide them as it states "Toggling show/hide is not supported for this item". I have power bi pro enterprise license and I am included in the workspace of this shared dataset and report. Is it the reason that I am unable to make changes?
On the other hand, i want to also apply RLS in the report that i want to create, however, i see that Manage Roles is greyed out and i am unable to define. Is it again workspace related issue or something else?
Appreciate your help, thanks!
Yes i do use live connection and cannot apply RLS. Who can apply RLS for the shared dataset? Is it only possible to apply the RLS in the original file? How to approach as i have it greyed-out?
Hi @GrimReaperX,
Did you work with live connection mode? If that is the case, it should be setting the security filter on your data source side instead of power bi side.

BTW, RLS roles only work for read permission users, the 'build permission' also provide the 'edit' permissions and the applied RLS effects will be ignored.

@Anonymous ,
just an update.... for anyone who is looking at Build permission with RLS
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/enterprise/service-admin-rls#using-rls-with-workspaces-in-power-bi
If you publish your Power BI Desktop report to a workspace in the Power BI service, the RLS roles are applied to members who are assigned to the Viewer role in the workspace. Even if Viewers are given Build permissions to the semantic model, RLS still applies. For example, if Viewers with Build permissions use Analyze in Excel, their view of the data is restricted by RLS. Workspace members assigned Admin, Member, or Contributor have edit permission for the semantic model and, therefore, RLS doesn’t apply to them. If you want RLS to apply to people in a workspace, you can only assign them the Viewer role. Read more about roles in workspaces.
