Apply All Slicers Button - But allow slicers to update during selection

First of all, I don't want the end user using the filter pane at all. I want to ONLY use slicers.

Let's say I have 3 slicers: Category, Subcategory, and Brand.
For Category, let's say there are 10 values. For Subcategory, there are 100 values (about 10 in each Category). For Brand, there are about 500 values (and each Brand can have multiple Subcategories and Categories).

I want to use the "Apply all slicers" button, so that all of my charts, tables, etc. aren't updating with every change of a slicer - to save on querying. Cool, awesome, great....

HOWEVER...When a user selects 1 Category, I NEED the Subcategory slicer to be updated to only show the Subcategories that fall in that Category. The same goes for the Brand slicer. Otherwise, what happens is they select a Category, then they go to the list of 100 subcategories and select a Subcategory. But it's highly likely they pick a Subcategory that doesn't actually fall in the Category they've selected. And then they click "Apply all" and no data populates of course, and they say "the report is broken". No...the report isn't broken, it's just that they selected a combo of Category/Subcategory/Brand that does not exist.

Please please please please is there any way to have the Slicers update each other live, but only update the other visuals on the page with a click of a button??

Any luck with this? Any advice or idea from anyone else?

Hi, @NewbNeedHelp

Thanks for rajendraongole1 reply. Personally, I think that once the Apply all slicers button is created, it disables the interaction between the slicers, and even if you already have selections in the slicer, the data can't be filtered until you click that button. This is by design. If you want the slicer to cross filter properly, you need to remove the button.

Thank you v-yaningy-msft! I think what I'm looking for is a workaround to that. I feel like there has to be some creative way to get around this. It would require not using the official "Apply All Slicers" functionality. But I'm not sure how to do it.

Hi, @NewbNeedHelp

Do not know how to emulate feature like "Apply All Slicers" for you. The best way to do the best filtering is to follow the way you use this feature, which is to click "Apply All Slicers" after each selection to get the slicer to interact properly.

Hi @NewbNeedHelp as per your scenerio, Power BI does not natively support the exact behavior you want i.e., slicers filtering each other dynamically without immediately affecting all visuals but only updating the visuals on the page when you click "Apply all" .

you can achieve in a way that , Set the slicers to "Single Select" mode to ensure that the user can only pick one value at a time in each slicer. This prevents the user from selecting incompatible values across slicers.

Also by enabling the sync slicer, if you select a Category, the Subcategory slicer automatically updates to only show relevant Subcategories, and similarly for Brand

Add a button labeled "Apply Filters" on the report. Set up a bookmark that doesn’t affect the visuals but uses a blank page for navigation. When users click "Apply Filters," this bookmark will be triggered, thereby indirectly simulating the "Apply all slicers" behavior

Hope the above approach will works in your case. please check.

Hi rajendraongole1,

I am not fully following. For one thing, I do need users to have ability to multi-select in the slicers. For the part about the apply filters button with a bookmark - I'm not following.

I've made an example file here:
