When your passion lies in data visualization, automation, and cats, it leads you to install sensors to track your feline companions' litter box visits. You diligently collect and store the data, utilizing Power BI to create insightful visualizations.
Chronic kidney disease poses a significant concern for mature and senior cats, typically manifesting in those aged seven and older. Statistics indicate that 30-40% of cats over 10 years and a staggering 81% of cats over 15 years may be affected. Recognizable symptoms include increased urination, easy bruising or bleeding. Given that Cheddar Cheese and Walker are both 13 years old, closely monitoring their litter box usage becomes essential to detect potential early signs of kidney failure.
Upon a month of monitoring, the data reveals a slight upward trend. However, in the past three days (1/31-2/2/2024), there has been a notable decrease in litter box visits. The discovery of two piles of poop outside the litter box today prompts a focused investigation, this dashboard helped pinpoint the specific date of this unusual behavior. As the trend fluctuates, moving both upward and downward, concerns about the well-being of Cheddar Cheese and Walker intensify.

I lost my 16 year old cat Buster. He was a great cat and I still miss him. I believe it may have been due to kidney failure. A couple other measures that would be interesting on this line chart would be water consumption (fluid ounces) and (weight lbs). I don't know if there is an effective visual that can show all 3 since they have different units of measures. I hope Cheddar Cheese and Walker have many more good years in them. 🙂
Thank you. When I first created this visual, I used a motion sensor near the litter box to count activations. This meant I couldn't determine which cat used the litter box or if it was triggered by the scooper. Recently, I added a camera that takes a picture when the motion sensor is activated. The picture is then sent to Gemini for analysis to identify who triggered the motion. This provides more detailed information about who and when the litter box is used.
Monitoring water intake is a great suggestion. I anticipate a strong positive correlation between water intake and litter box usage. Adding another camera near the water fountain would provide more clarity on this relationship.
