In this report we have loaded 30 years of house price data for England and Wales with the objective of using Power BI to generate descriptive analytics over this data.
Our aim for this report is to encourage our audience to explore and unlock valuable insights into the England and Wales housing market to answer questions such as:
- Where can you find the most affordable properties?
- How have house prices evolved over the last three decades?
- What are the price differences between flats, detached homes, and other property types?
- How many new properties are being built and where are they located?
- Which areas are experiencing the highest sales activity?

This is also an opportunity to explore some specific features in Power BI that are suited to this type of analysis:
- We designed a bespoke suite of icons and pictograms in visuals and report navigation to enhance accessibility to support the report.
- Use of DAX measures to consolidate data across nearly 30 million data points to provide actionable insights.
- Application of dimensional modelling to make the report snappy to respond and intuitive to use.
- Implementation of a date dimension that enables house price data to be aggregated through daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly levels of granularity, allowing users to interactively drill up or down through this hierarchy.
- Illustrating specific visualization features that are well suited to analysis of this type of data in reports such maps, conditional formatting (data bars, icons, and background colors) and spark lines.

The data is sourced from the UK.GOV “use land and property data” we site which enables you to download price paid data collected by Land Registry for all properties sold in England and Wales. This data is being used for educational purposes, to bring key features in Power BI to life.
