Good Morning,
Morning - our organisation is looking at implementing Fabric later this year/early next and in the mean-time our team are starting 60 day trials to do a bit of learning beforehand. I've been working through the tutorials and have hit an issue.
When trying to create a semantic model (New Semantic Model button) from some lakehouse tables, the dialog that pops up says the following:
Workspace
Only workspaces in a Fabric capacity are shown.
Please create a workspace first.
I have a trial workspace, called 'My workspace', but the dialog doesn't seem to recognise this?
If I try to create a new workspace assigned to the Trial capacity, I get the following message:
To use Power BI paid features, contact your Microsoft 365 global admin or billing admin to upgrade your license.
You'll get access to all paid features. What's included?
You can also contact your Power BI admin to request a free trial for 60 days."
But I have activated the 60 day trial - have I missed something? Is this an error on my part, an issue with how we've set up the system so far or a limitation of the trial?
Any assistance appreciated!

Hi @KarlMolden
This is how it separates
Before it was like this
Power BI Pro | Power BI Premium capacity ( Diamond ) | Power BI capacity per user
US $ 10 / month | US $ 5000 /month | US $ 25 / Month
Now it is called Microsoft Fabric with
Power BI Dataflow Gen 2 for ETL ( Fabric SQL ) and Power BI Premium in Direct Lake Approach. ( Pay as you go approach or Power BI Premium or Trial Capacity either of three)
Also, To write any Power BI reports ( ETL + Power BI Data Semantic Model + Power BI Data Visulisation = Unified ) , You need to have Power BI Pro license compulsary or trial capacity ( Either of that )

@KarlMolden Any Fabric items including semantic models require a workspace with assigned Fabric capacity. In your case that would be a trial capacity that you received when initiated a 60 days Fabric trial. The workspace with a Fabric capacity has a diamond icon on the right side of its name. My Workspace by default is not assigned a Fabric capacity. You can assign a Fabric capacity to My Workspace but it's not recommended unless you are creating and running Fabric workloads in My Workspace. The suggested approach is to create a shared workspace for your team and assign a Fabric capacity to it (trial in your case) using a Licensing tab in wokspace settings. Once you do that you should see a diamond icon icon in the workspace name and you should be able to create any required Fabric items in that workspace. Hope that helps. Have you created a workspace or are you using the "My Workspace" (which is pretty confusing, but this is not an actual workspace).
To create one, follow these steps:
Click on Workspaces in left pane. And Click on "New Workspace" button to create one.
Thanks for the answer - yes, when I do this (create a new workspace and then click Apply in the dialog that follows) I get the following message:
To use Power BI paid features, contact your Microsoft 365 global admin or billing admin to upgrade your license.
You'll get access to all paid features. What's included?
You can also contact your Power BI admin to request a free trial for 60 days."
I suspect this is an issue with how we've implemented things, but it's new to me so not entirely sure.
Check out the November 2025 Fabric update to learn about new features.
