Semantic Model Take Over Error

One of our employees created a semantic model using one of our data sources. He has since left the company, and his account has been removed. After that, I took over the semantic model. After taking over, I’ve been receiving an error. When I try to enter the credentials for the data source, the option appears disabled. Both the former employee and I have Admin access to the workspace. How can I resolve this issue?

Hi @kasun_rumesh,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

The issue may be related to the ownership transition. Here’s how you can resolve this:

  • Confirm your Admin role is fully updated in the workspace settings, as the former employee’s account removal might have caused a permission conflict.
  • In the Power BI Service, go to the workspace, locate the semantic model, click the ellipsis (three dots), and select "Take over" to ensure you’re the official owner.
  • Navigate to the semantic model settings in Power BI Service, and under "Data source credentials," try to update the credentials manually. If the option remains disabled, it might be tied to a gateway or ownership issue.
  • If the above doesn’t work, you may need to remove the existing data source in the semantic model settings and add it again using your credentials.

Hi @kasun_rumesh,

Thank you for the update. Please consider the below steps:

  • In Power BI Service, go to "Gateway and cloud connections" in the workspace. Ensure the gateway is listed as "Online." If not, confirm the on-premises data gateway is installed and running on the server.
  • The gateway might be tied to the former employee’s account. In Power BI Service, go to "Manage gateways" (you may need admin portal access). Verify you’re listed as a gateway administrator; if not, add yourself.
  • In "Gateway and cloud connections," locate the data source for the FactSales semantic model. If it uses the former employee’s credentials, remove and re-add it with your credentials, then re-map it to the gateway and test the connection after reconfiguring. If it fails, check credentials, server details, or firewall settings.
  • If the data source doesn’t need a gateway, remove the gateway association and set it up as a cloud connection.

Thank you.

I have tried all the things you mentioned in there. I'm stuck in Data Gateway part.
