Issue While Creating SMB Folder Connection Using On-Premises Data Gateway in Microsoft Fabric

Hi Team,

Today, we were trying to create a new connection for an SMB path using the Folder option in Microsoft Fabric. The source path is hosted inside an Azure VM. However, the VM is not domain-joined.

While attempting to create the connection through the On-Premises Data Gateway, we encountered the following error indicating invalid connection credentials.

Although we are able to access the shared path successfully from the gateway server itself, the connection creation from the Microsoft Fabric UI is failing with the same error.

Could you please suggest the correct approach or configuration required to establish this connection successfully in this scenario?

Please find the error details attached below for reference.

Thank you for your support.

Hi @achintamondal21

Be sure to add the domain before the username.

If your domain name is ABC, put in ABC\username.

Hi @achintamondal21 ,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community.

Please verify the following configurations on the gateway and SMB share:

Ensure the account running the On-Premises Data Gateway service has access to the shared folder.
Try specifying the username in one of the following formats:
MachineName\UserName
.\UserName
Confirm that both Share-level permissions and NTFS permissions are granted for the account being used.
Verify that SMB port 445 is accessible from the gateway server to the target VM.
Restart the On-Premises Data Gateway service after updating credentials or permissions.
As a troubleshooting step, try enabling the Skip test connection option while creating the connection.

Additionally, for Fabric Folder connections, Microsoft generally recommends using a domain joined environment, or Azure Files with supported authentication mechanisms
This is because SMB shares hosted on non domain joined VMs using local Windows accounts may encounter credential validation issues during connection creation through the gateway.

Thank you.
