query on date format

My period column is in "January 1, 2024" format and I want to convert it to "Jan 2024". It worked using format(period, "MMM yyyy") ONLY in text format. But I need it in Date format. The default text format doesn't contain this format.

Select your date column or convert it to date column by changing data type  and directly enter simple letters formating string as shown below
