getting previous month using time intelligence

hello.  below is the DAX formula that i am using to try to get the previous month's data but I keep getting a blank.  can someone please help?

 
= CALCULATE( sum('tbl_Combined_InvoiceData'[Charges]), filter('Date2','Date2'[Period].[Date] = date(year(today()),Month(Today())-1, day(today()))))

try

= CALCULATE( sum('tbl_Combined_InvoiceData'[Charges]), PREVIOUSMONTH('Date2'[Period]))
