Direct Query Converting Number To Text

Hi there, 

I'm producing a simple report for work that must include slicer buttons for each day of the week so management can easily view sales trends for each day of the week. 

I've managed to use the weekday function to convert the dates to numbers 1-7 (mon-sun) but I want to now convert these numbers to text e.g. IF( day=1, "Monday", IF(day=2, "Tuesday, .... etc. 

This doesn't work as I'm trying to convert numbers to text. 

I'm using direct query so I cannot use the convert or format functions. 

Also there is no checkbox option to allow unrestricted measures via direct query in the data source options (seen this suggestion in other threads)

This is a relatively simple formula and for some reason finding impossible to achieve - any help will be much appreciated. 

Essentially just need to find a way to convert numbers to text when using a direct query data source.
