Paginated report refresh failure notification

Hi all,

Just curious to know, is there any method available using which e can email alerts whenever a power bi paginated report refresh gets fail?

For power bi reports, we have a default method available in power bi service to send email notification but for paginated repot, I can't see any such option.

I checked power automate and as per my knowledge no such option is available there.

Kindly help me with the steps or provide alternatives.

    Hi upharanand

Following up to confirm if the earlier responses addressed your query. If not, please share your questions and we’ll assist further.

  • Yes. For Power BI Paginated Reports, there isn’t currently the same built-in email notification for refresh failures that you get with regular Power BI semantic models/reports.

    A common workaround is:

Use Power Automate with a scheduled flow.

Call the Power BI REST API to retrieve the paginated report/dataset refresh history.

    Check the latest refresh status.

If the status is Failed, send an email/Teams notification.

Optionally, store the last checked refresh ID/time to avoid duplicate alerts.

Another option is to monitor the Power BI/Fabric activity logs and trigger an alert through Azure Monitor/Log Analytics, depending on your licensing and tenant setup.

If you need a simple solution without custom API work, monitoring through the Power BI/Fabric admin/activity logs is generally easier than trying to configure a native paginated-report refresh alert.

    Hi upharanand

Power BI Service doesn't provide a built-in email notification specifically for a paginated report refresh failure, because paginated reports don't have a scheduled refresh mechanism comparable to Power BI semantic models. The refresh failure notifications documented for Power BI apply to semantic model refreshes.

If you're referring to a paginated report subscription, Power BI Service can send failure notifications when the subscription execution fails. These notifications are sent to the subscription owner (creator).

    Possible alternatives include:

    • Monitoring the underlying semantic model refresh status and configuring refresh failure notifications there.
    • Using the Power BI REST APIs, Activity Log, or Fabric monitoring solutions to track subscription/report execution failures and generate custom alerts.

        Hi upharanand

If you’re referring to a paginated report refresh, there isn’t a separate refresh history API for the paginated report itself. You can instead monitor the refresh of the semantic model (dataset) that the report uses.

The Power BI REST API provides the Get Refresh History endpoint, which returns the refresh status, such as Completed or Failed, along with error details in serviceExceptionJson. This can then be used with a scheduled process or Power Automate to send an email when a refresh fails.
