Revenue is a vanity metric. Profit is sanity. 📉 I just finished analyzing this $128M performance dashboard, and the data tells a sobering story: You can sell a lot and still lose money. The Problem "Top-line blindness." It’s easy to celebrate 128M in Revenue while missing the fact that certain segments are quietly eroding your margins. The Data Story: The "Small Business" Trap The Win: The Government segment is a powerhouse—high volume, high profit. The Warning: Look at the Small Business segment. Despite moving thousands of units, profit dives into the negative. The Lesson: High volume in the wrong segment is just a faster way to lose money. The Strategy Optimize: Re-evaluate the pricing and discount strategy for Small Business. Double Down: Scale the Paseo product line (30% market share) in top-tier regions like the US and Canada. Trim: Pivot resources away from low-performing lines like Carretera. The Bottom Line: Don't just track growth—track profitable growth. Revenue is a vanity metric. Quick Viz Challenge: Time Traveller The challenge was to create a line chart that tells a compelling story For this challenge I used sample data provided in Power Bi on Finance Here's how I designed the visual: - Added title and subtitle to give away some information about the chart - Used Leader lines with offset and Detail Labels to explain the variables plotted - Used Custom Chart title to display text - Used icons in subtitle to distinguish between each KPI drawn This chart shows the Gross Sales Trend over the analysis, also computing the Gross Margin and Volume (Units Sold) during the tenure. It shows that Gross Margin stands at ~20% throughout irrespective of the Price, Discount offered and Volume. I attempted to recreate the “Weather Today” preview from Microsoft Edge inside Power BI as part of the QuickViz Challenge during Microsoft Fabric Data Days. The initial goal was straightforward: build a simple line chart to represent temperature trends. However, this exercise evolved into exploring how far we can push custom visuals, design visual and interactivity within Power BI using native features. Key aspect: Minimalist design approach, inspired by Edge’s clean UI. This is not a polished solution — there’s room for improvement in terms of visual best practices, dynamic behavior, and UI refinements. The intent was to demonstrate how quickly we can prototype ideas in Power BI and leverage them for storytelling. If you’re curious, the PBIX file is available for download.
