Usage Monitor Desktop > Online
Dear reader,
For a research im doing within a relatively big company, I'm trying to advice the company on how to setup their Self-Service (BI) strategy. During this research I've hit a point where the IT department would like to be able to monitor the current usage of the current BI users (Some already work Self-Service). These users all use the Power BI desktop to create their own reports and dashboards, with their own measures, transforming data etc. To protect and ensure data governance, it would be awesome if IT could have a birds-eye-view on what people are making and how.. So the question is:
Is it possible for IT to have an oversight on the creations from the end-users? Let's say they upload their Power BI Desktop products to the online enviroment. I've found a few things that suggest so, but I dont know if those apply to Power BI Desktop creations.
If you need more info, I'd love to hear it.
Thanks in advance,
Daniël
PS: as you can probably tell im not very tech-savy, but i'm trying to learn!
- Hi, yes you can monitor some activities but not all. If you look into the protection centre in o365 under activities (power bi) than you have a lot of activities to monitor. May be you go first there and look what is possible ;). Best, Kathrin
Hi Anonymous ,
"So can they check used measures, data source(s), changes made to a report, etc... "
There are roughly two types of data that you want to monitor. One is operations on datasets, reports, and dashboards, and the other is data and data sources.
1. How to monitor the first type of information?
Admin portal -> Usage metrics/Audit logs
What is Power BI administration?
Track user activities in Power BI
2. How to monitor the second type of information?
PBI itself does not have such a tool that allows administrators to view all datasets and data sources in the organization.(Unless the data is shared.)
Maybe you can check the logs of the gateway cluster.
Manage on-premises data gateway high-availability clusters and load balancing
Configure log files for the on-premises data gateway

Thanks Kathrin for the swift reply!
That's the post I had already seen and mostly read. Though I couldn't make up if those functionalities also worked when a desktop report was published to Power BI service. I figured maybe that would only work for products made in the online environment. Could you confirm it works for Power BI desktop reports?
That'd be wonderful!
Thanks you so much,
Daniël
- KBOMemorable MemberHi, no. The Power BI desktop is only the building tool :). There you can't monitor. Best, Kathrin
