Hello everyone. This is my first post here, so I'm hoping I can explain what kind of help I need.
My company started using Power BI Service a few weeks ago and I have a question on how I can update an online dataset.
Example: I've built a .pbix file using 3 tables in a SQL Server database. From that, I've done some modifications using Power Query (filtering some columns, etc) and lastly did some work on DAX.
So, I've built some reports on this file using the desktop version (a dozen reports at least).
After that, I uploaded the pbix file. The final result on Power bi Service is:
I've setup the gateway already so any change on the SQL database would work. But the thing is: Sometimes I have to build some reports which need more information from the data. So I have to open my pbix file and change the DAX (let's say, add a new column or a new measure to use in the new report).
If I build this report and upload the file again it will create a new dataset. But the truth is that I want to 'update' the old pbix file to have these changes that I've just made and have a single source of truth on the website.
Is it possible to do that? How am I be able replace a dataset using a new version of the same pbix file?
Thanks in advance everyone!

If you use the same file name as the original report then wehn you publish it should overwrite existing dataset rather than create a new one. That isn't the case for you?

Hello, I have a similar question to this, so just want to verify that the answer is the same.
My set up is very similar, I have 3 excel files making up the dataset and have built multiple reports on this dataset.
If I publish using the same file name as the original report after making some DAX tweaks etc, would the multiple reports still be able to reference the new dataset or would I lose the connection to the dataset?
Thank you for your reply Stachu.
I haven't try that yet. The problem is, the pbix file is quite big. At first I had all the different reports in the same file (I used the tabs to navigate between them), which I had to change it after that, since I was looking for different reports in the report page (if you have many tabs in a single file, it will be just one 'report' in the report page and I was looking for different files).
Let's say that I modify the DAX on the pbix file (e.g. to add a new column) and upload this file again without any reports (just to enable my team to build reports on the BI Service using the column I just created). What's gonna happen with the other reports that I have previouly created attached to this dataset on the web?
The dataset will change for all of them, so if there are any inconsistencies you may have an issue with that, see here:
E.g. if you have a Turnover Measure and you change it's DAX then it will be calculated in a new manner in all the reports using that dataset that use that measure.
You can assess the potential impact using built in tools:

Thanks for the reply Stachu.
The solution is actually publish the dataset again. It is not very flexible, since I already have a bunch of reports linked to other datasets over BI Service.
I was hoping to have an option where I could change the dataset for that specific report. But I'll have to:
Once again, thank you for your help man!
