Track user activity - What filter options they are selecting

Hi everyone

I have created a number of reports and they include filter on staff and dates. I am not using RLS as it's not sensitive material. However, what the management are looking for is a report that tells them who is selecting which filters, so in this case which staff have filtered other staff and what dates etc.

Is there anything out there that can do this? I have seen the Track user activity page and its not exactly clear if this can be done.

Thanks in advance

Ask your legal or procurement department - whoever signed the contract for your capacities will also have the information on the tech support contacts.

  • we have just gone through such an exercise and it is extremely complex. You will have to engage Microsoft and ask them to (with your permission) decrypt the terabytes of telemetry they keep on your user activity, and then send you the relevant DAX queries that your users have initiated. The DAX queries explicitly mention the filters that were used for each query.

Expect this to take an enormous amount of time and effort.  Absolutely not something of a "nice to have thing for management".

Thank you for getting back to me

It's great to know there is something out there that can be done, just so I have for reference, the exact team or department I need to contact for this decryption?

    Hi, Anonymous

Regarding your needs, have you considered doing so by looking at Report Usage Metrics?

Some of the metrics included in Report Usage Metrics may be required by you.

    • Unique viewers: A viewer is someone who opened the report at least once during the time period (based on the AAD user account).
    • Users with report views: Shows the list of users who opened the report sorted by view count.
    • Rank: Based on view count, the rank shows the popularity of a report in comparison to all other reports in the organization. A rank of 1 would mean the report has the most views of all reports in the organization.

This is the relevant document, hope to help you:
