Sub-section Access in Power BI Workspace App Navigation & Audience Features in Org Apps
Hello All,
I have two related questions/requirements regarding Power BI Apps and organizational navigation:
- Sub-section access in Workspace App navigation
- In the current Power BI workspace app, I can create sections (e.g., “Department A”) and assign them to an audience group (e.g., Audience Group A).
- My requirement is more granular: within that section, I’d like to define sub-sections (e.g., Sub-section 1, Sub-section 2).
- For example:
- User A (in Audience Group A) should only see Sub-section 1.
- User B (in Audience Group A) should see both Sub-section 1 and Sub-section 2.
- Is this level of navigation control currently supported, or planned for a future release?
- Audience feature in Organizational Apps
- In Org Apps (not workspace apps), is there an option to create and manage audience groups similar to workspace app audiences?
- If not, is this something that is being considered for upcoming releases?
Has anyone else encountered similar requirements or found a workaround?

I was notified they would not ship to GA w/o audience support.

Currently, Power BI does not support creating sub-sections within a section in the workspace app navigation. The audience feature applies only at the section or report level, so users in the same audience group will see the same section, without the option to divide it further into sub-sections. Microsoft has not shared any plans to add this level of navigation control.
For organizational apps, the audience feature from workspace apps is not available. Access is managed only through permissions or security groups at the app level. Although many users have requested these features, there are no official updates from Microsoft yet.
As alternatives, users often create separate sections or apps for different groups, or use Row Level Security if only the data needs to differ, not the navigation. Another approach is to publish different versions of the workspace app for different audiences. While the need is valid, it is not directly achievable with the current capabilities.

- Workspace Apps: You can’t restrict visibility within a section (no sub-section access control). Use separate sections and audience groups as a workaround.
- Organizational Apps: Yes, audience groups are now supported—similar to Workspace Apps. You can manage visibility per audience.

Could you please provide me with a guide or tutorial on how to accomplish this task? I’ve noticed that other users have mentioned that there isn’t an option in Org Apps for this specific functionality. I’m a bit confused about how to proceed.
