SharePoint Group Permissions to Power BI Semantic Model
Hi Christine, I should have specified that I created a Communication SharePoint site. From what I read a M365 group is only created for a Teams SharePoint site.
I guess you can create an Azure Active Directory security group instead and share the various things with the security group then if you don't need the SP site-- if you don't have permission to create one, your IT should be willing to set one up for you.

That's a big assumption. It doesn't make sense that we can't use custom groups created in SharePoint/OneDrive or create new ones specifically for Power BI without having to get IT involved.

You can't even use SharePoint groups in other top-level SharePoint sites, only subsites of the site collection - they don't exist outside that, that's why they can't be used in Power BI. That's probably part of why Microsoft introduced M365 groups with team sites - to give a security group that can be used elsewhere. Communication sites don't create a group that can be used outside of SP though, it is what it is.
