Scheduled Refresh Fails in Power BI Service After Gateway Update (SAP Data Source)

Hello,
I am experiencing an issue with Power BI Service where the scheduled refresh fails, even though the refresh works normally in Power BI Desktop.

Environment & Data Source

  • Data Source: SAP (BW / ECC)
  • Location of issue: Local machine (used for testing)
  • Trigger of issue: Gateway update

Symptoms

  • Power BI Desktop: Refresh works normally
  • Power BI Service: Scheduled refresh fails
  • Gateway: Updated on this machine before the issue occurred

Initial Troubleshooting Performed

  1. SAP GUI login works normally → This rules out incorrect SAP username/password.
  2. Another VM with an older version of the Gateway can refresh successfully → This suggests the issue is not firewall-related.

Question

Given the symptoms above, what other factors could cause scheduled refresh to fail in Power BI Service after a Gateway update?
Any suggestions or diagnostic steps would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

Environment & Data Source

  • Data Source: SAP (BW / ECC)
  • Location of issue: Local machine (used for testing)
  • Trigger of issue: Gateway update

Symptoms

  • Power BI Desktop: Refresh works normally
  • Power BI Service: Scheduled refresh fails
  • Gateway: Updated on this machine before the issue occurred

SUGGESTED SOLUTION:

Even if SAP is connected locally and works locally alright, the service uses stored credentials via the gateway.

Please do the following checks

  • Check:

Go to Power BI Service → Dataset → Settings → Data source credentials

  • Common Issue: Credentials became invalid or reset after gateway update
  • Fix: Re-enter credentials and re-bind the dataset to the gateway

Try the refresh again, see if this gets go through.
If no success then try this quick check list.

Quick Fix Checklist

Try these in order:

  1. Re-enter credentials in Power BI Service
  2. Recreate SAP data source in gateway
  3. Rebind dataset.
  4. Check gateway logs.
  5. Replicate old VM settings in new VM (Sometimes new version do have some restrictions in place)

Hello @LIZQQ

try these

Reinstall SAP NCo (64-bit) → version mismatch after gateway update
Check Gateway Service Account → ensure it has SAP access
Re-enter credentials in Power BI Service
Restore SAP Logon config (saplogon.ini / XML path)
Restart or reinstall Gateway
