Schedule refresh a Excel workbook on PBI without a Data Model
Hi there,
Just wondering if it is possible to schedule refresh an Excel workbook on PBI server without adding the data to the data model. The following is my current process:
1. Query data from an Oracle data warehouse
2. Load it into a Pivot table without adding it to a data model
3. Publish the Excel workbook to a Sharepoint site
4. Connect the workbook from the PBI server
At the moment, to refresh the Excel workbook, I need to open it from the Sharepoint site via my Desktop App, and refresh it manually. Is it possible to enable the scheduled refresh feature on the PBI server?
Thanks
Eric

Hi ericw,
It sounds like you are creating an excel workbook with a connection to external data and stored in SharePoint online folder.
For this scenario, your data table who connects to external data source not changes except you open excel file and do update operation and save these changes. (notice: excel file not a live data source that auto-trigger the refresh for existing datasource connections)
Even if your setting scheduled refresh, it also not triggered the internal connection to getting the last data from external datasource.

Hi Xiaoxin,
So the only way to refresh the data in Excel via PBI server is by adding the data to a data model, which then becomes an OLAP cube?
Thanks
