Problem with setting "Users can work with Power BI semantic models in Excel using a live connection"

Hello,

I have a problem with an option in the administrator portal, this one:

DidacBF_0-1704974904674.png

I don't want users to have the option to connect to semantic models through Excel. However, if I disable this option, when I download a Report (made with powerbi, not excel) from the Service connected to a semantic model via live connection and I try to open it in the Desktop, it gives me the following error:

Does it make any sense? If so, does this mean that you cannot disable the option for users to access semantic models only through Excel?

Isn't this other option the one that should give me the error when disabled?

Thank you!

I want to second this. We do not want "Users can work with semantic models in Excel using a live connection", but disabling this option restrics "developers" from making a live connection in pbi desktop, not excel. Seems like a bug. Hope this can be fixed.

Hi @Redriver123 do you have an update on this? If so how did you fix it? - I am experiencing the same issue...fffss

Hi @DidacBF ,

If you have edit access to the report and has access to the underlying data source, you can download this pbix in Live Connection.

Below is the official link:

Export and sharing tenant settings - Microsoft Fabric | Microsoft Learn

Connect Excel to Power BI semantic models - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

To DirectQuery connections , the link will help you:

Manage DirectQuery connections to a published semantic model - Power BI | Microsoft Learn

Hello @Anonymous

I have both, edit and acces to the underlying data.

But I don't understand why this option is giving me problems with my reports with a live connection if the option is about Excel. I've never had any problems with live connection before.

Hi @DidacBF ,

I know what you mean, which means that as long as you turn this button off, all your Live Connection reports won't open, right?

I just tried it and found that after I turned that option off, I could still see the Live Connection report.

Maybe it's the version, the version I'm currently using is:13.0.22453.72

That's what I meant yes!
I'm on this version (desktop):

Not sure how to get PBI service one.

Today the problem solved itself just by reconnecting the report to it's semantic model again, It didn't work yesterday.

But I am still unable to upload it to service:

I don't know why because it doens't give me any context at all...

Just so you know, we are working with GIT (preview pbip Powerbi Projects). If I save it as .pbix then I can upload it. Maybe it has something to do about being in preview but it didn't happen before and I don't know how to report the issue if needed.

Thank you!
