Hi rsweeney ,

You can create a composite model and try to refresh 8 times in a day if you have pro workspace and in premium you refresh 48 times in a day.

Regarding the issue you raised, my solution is as follows:

1.First, you can download the data gateway and sign up with your work account.

2.Next, go to the Create connections page to create a local connection or cloud connection:

3.Finally, configure the scheduled refresh on the Semantic Model Settings page:

4.You can check if the refresh was successful in the refresh history:

If live means once a week or once a day, you can schedule refresh on it. Is it SharePoint Online (having .sharepoint.com in the address) or on-premise? If it's online, you don't need a gateway. I did a tutorial here for SPO if that helps.

Above tutorial is good for scheduling your excel refresh once a week. 
If you connect to Sales Force through direct query, you may need to create a composite model (as mentioned ealier by SaiTejaTalasila ),as the Excel file data will use Import mode.
