Power BI Embed Report - Use Direct Query with SQL Server database

Is there a way to embed a report while using a SQL Server Database that is on my server instead of the Azure SQL Database?

I can get it to work when I publish the report through Power BI Service, but can't get any datasources when I try to embed the report.

Hi @khochschild,

If you use PowerBi Workspace Collections (which are retired and soon their support will be ended), there's no specific gateway and DirectQuery mode only supports Azure SQL database and Azure SQL data warehouse. If in this case, it is not applicable for you, because you're using SQL Server in DirectQuery mode.

If you use the new  Power BI Embedded capacity-based SKUs, the pbix files are published to the service. In this case, you can just set up gateways and use DirectQuery modes for all supported data sources.

Here you can find the data sources supported by DirectQuery in Power BI and which needs a gateway.

Hello Khochschild,

You may have to set up a Enterprise or Personal Gateway to create a connection between your on-prem SQL server, and the Embedded report.
