How to schedule refresh PowerBI dashboard with Excel as Data source

Hi all

I have published my PowerBI on app.powerbi.com and am trying to create a scheduled refresh.

My current data source is excel file. Due to org restrictions, I am unable to create a gateway. Hence, data refresh on prem does not seem to be possible.

Is there anything I could do to create a scheduled refresh for my data source (e.g. saving my excel sheet onto OneDrive, would that work)? I can't seem to toggle the gateway connections to 'Off'.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Hi @powerbidu

You can refresh it without gateway using the following steps.

Step 1 - You need to open the file in your one drive where it is stored. Go to file->info->copy path as below

Step 2 - After getting this path from here, open your pbix file->get data from the above path.

Step 3 - Publish it workspace. Data Source credential and refresh will be enabled.

Hi @powerbidu ,

Do you have the required permissions? For OneDrive, you would need edit access, and for the workspace, the appropriate role is essential.

Thank You.

Hi @powerbidu Since you don’t have permission for a gateway, the best option is to store your Excel file in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online. This allows you to schedule a refresh without needing a gateway. In Power BI Service, go to Dataset settings → Scheduled refresh and enable it. Make sure the dataset is connected via the Web connector for it to work.
