Guidance Needed: Configuring On-Prem Gateway for Databricks Connection

Hi everyone!

 

I’m trying to establish a connection to Databricks using my on-premises gateway. Databricks is behind a firewall, and here’s what I’ve already done:

  • Verified that all required ports are open

  • Ensured the gateway software is up to date

  • Installed the Simba ODBC driver on the server

Despite this, the connection still doesn’t work via the on-prem gateway. I suspect the issue may lie in the gateway configuration. Specifically, I’m trying to identify:

  • Which configuration files or settings in the on-prem gateway need to be adjusted for Databricks connectivity

Here is the error message we’re seeing:

Unable to create connection for the following reason: Unable to connect to the data source. Either the data source is inaccessible, a connection timeout occurred, or the data source credentials are invalid. Please verify the data source configuration and contact a data source administrator to troubleshoot this issue.

If anyone has successfully configured an on-prem gateway for Databricks, your guidance, examples, or links to documentation would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

    Please check with your Databricks admin and request them to whitelist on Databricks side both Power BI endpoint and Gateway Endpoints.

    Gateway Endpoint: Adjust communication settings for the on-premises data gateway | Microsoft Learn

     

    This is important because when Power BI connects to Databricks (either through a direct connection or via a gateway), the communication occurs over secure ports, but it still needs to be explicitly allowed by the Databricks cluster’s network configuration. If these endpoints are not whitelisted, the gateway will fail to establish a connection, resulting in timeout or authentication errors.

    Hi ogureisuo 

     

    What I would recommend doing is logging onto your on premise gateway and making sure that when you test the Simba ODBC driver that it can successfully connect to your data bricks. Once that is done I will then go to the Power BI service and under the gateway settings add a new data source and put in the credentials needed for the ODBC driver to successfully connect via the gateway. Publish to the Power BI service from Databricks | Databricks on AWS
