Guest User Confusion

Shout out to anyone who may know a bit more. When I am working for a company developing for them I usually get given an internal account to work with.

 

But what about being a Power BI Developer with a Guest User account?

 

When I log in with my work account. Power BI would automatically take me to my own tenancy. Not the companys tenancy that I have been made a guest user of.

 

I know you can send guest users reports and they access Power BI this way usually. But, I just can't see a clear path of working as a Power BI developer with a Guest account. Has anyone done this and it be fine?

    I have taken from this that Im definitely going to get an internal account sorted out with them and explain why. Its clearly just too complex to attempt to set up as a guest.

      DebbieE Thats the best path forward. Im still trying to get Anonymous to confirm the guest access, would you mind not marking any solution until she is done?

    For development on power bi desktop and then publish it to client tenant using your account, yes you can. Given that your guest account have access to the client's workspace. If you want to try this:
    1. go to PBI desktop
    2. sign in, but this time choose the option Use another account

    3. then choose the option Sign-in options at the bottom selection

    4. then choose Sign in to an organization

    5. insert client's domain

    6. then sign in using your own account

     

    When you hit publish, you will see the workspaces in the clients tenant that you have access to, to publish.


    But to access the client's power bi service (ie workspace ), it still doesnt really work yet. You will need an internal account to access the workspace. Try the same steps in power bi service, it will look like it is going to take you to client's tenant, but when sign-in is done, it takes you back to your tenant. boo.  Use the client's tenant url, as mentioned above by Anonymous . But workspace access is still not visible (updated 5 July 2024).

    I noticed that there are some details about this situation, please allow me to share them for your reference.

     

    When you log in to the service, PowerBI determines which tenant you belong to and logs you in accordingly. As a guest user, if you need access to the other tenant, you can try the following:

     

    You need to be assigned a role in the workspace and use the tenant URL of the other party to enter the workspace.
