Error Creating Shortcut access to External Kusto Db using Eventhouse
Hello, I am facing a issue where I am not able to create a Eventhouse shortcut to an external Kusto Cluster inspite of having admin access to the Kusto cluster. I am trying to create it in my workspace so there is no Fabric workspace access issue. The error message states that contributor or above access to the Kusto Cluster is needed. As mentioned, I already have admin access.

Since you have confirmed that you followed the steps in the documentation and still encountered the region incompatibility issue, it appears that the problem is due to the limitation of the trial subscription. Trial subscriptions are tied to the tenant’s region, and you cannot change the region of the trial workspace.
To resolve this issue, here are a few steps you might consider:
- If possible, consider upgrading to a paid subscription, which allows you to select the region for your workspace. This will enable you to match the region of your Kusto cluster and Eventhouse shortcut.
- If upgrading isn’t feasible, you may need to create a new workspace in a region that matches your Kusto cluster. Note that this option might require a paid subscription.

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft fabric community forum regarding the issue you are experiencing with creating a shortcut to an external Kusto Cluster in Eventhouse.You mentioned that although you have admin access to the Kusto Cluster, you are getting an error. This may be due to, although you have admin access, the system might not recognize it as sufficient for creating shortcuts. Certain operations may require explicit contributor-level permissions. It may be necessary to review and adjust the permission settings for your account on the Kusto Cluster.
Please consider the following steps to address this issue :
- Verify that your account is assigned as a contributor or holds a higher-level role on the Kusto Cluster. Be aware that permissions at different levels (workspace vs. cluster) can sometimes cause confusion.
- Verify if there are any item-level access controls that could limit your ability to create shortcuts. You may need to modify these settings or consult with an administrator responsible for managing these access controls.
- If you have access to the Eventhouse service settings, check if there are any additional permissions or configurations needed within Eventhouse for accessing external Kusto clusters.
- Ensure that there are no network policies or firewalls that might be restricting access to the Kusto cluster from Eventhouse.

Thank you for the resolution options provided. I was able to make some progress by adding the Kusto Contributor access in addition to admin acces to the Source cluster. Using invitation token method, the Eventhouse shortcut is now able to recognize the source cluster but there is now an error stating the the source kusto cluster and the Eventhouse shortcut in Fabric are in different cloud regions causing an incompatibility issue as shown below. Can you please share some steps on how to change the trial version workspace to 'US West' instead of 'US West Central'.

Yes, I followed this link and tried both using invitation and by directly adding the cluster Url.
I was told that it is currently not possible to change the region of a trial subscription as it is tied to the tenant's region.
