Datamart - unable to connect to Azure SQL DB?
Hi folks,
we have a Premium Capacity, Gen2. Datamart is available as preview. Everything as it is supposed to be.
When i try to connect to our SQL DB in Azure, i do receive an errormessage that literally says...nothing:
"Unexpected error (Session ID: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, Region:US)" - Nothing else is stated.
I did put in the following settings:
Connect to data source -> Azure SQL database
Servername, Database
Connection credentials:
Data gateway: (none)
Authentication kind: basic
Username + Password
These settings are working 100%, when i do the same in Power BI Desktop, i can access the db and everything is flawless (Import mode).
I already tried another browser, unselected pop-up blocker, etc...everything is usually try before asking for help š
Anyone with a hint for me? We have a premium capacity, but we are not the tenant admins (one company among some...). I.e. i can not directly change something in the tenant settings, only the capacity settings. Additional information....
Just for the heads up, you CAN connect the Power Bi Desktop to the Azure SQL DB generated by the Datamart with import mode.
Regarding the creation of a dataset from the datamart in the cloud, it auto generates one for you with direct query to build reports. In case you want to build them in a different workspace you need to be member or admin in the workspace of the datamart.
Can you show a picture of the issue? I don't understand from where you are connecting to where and receiving the error. Keep in mind datamarts is preview. If you have an issue connecting to an azure source it can be a problem of firewall on the DB or bug for now.
I hope that helps,

Hi. I don't understand where you are connecting from. You said it's working from PBI Desktop.... that means it works. Just remember there is a limitation for the access. You can only do it with SMSS or Azure Data Studio (regarding DBMS tools)
I hope that helps,

ibarrau I do connect directly from a workspace in the service, as it is supposed to be with datamarts.
If i connect to OneDrive e.g., it is working.
The need to build everything in PBI Desktop is gone with the concept of datamarts, officially announced by MS...so your answer is kind of confusing for me. The example with PBI Desktop was just to show that the credentials, settings and db is okay.
Datamart features:
- 100% web-based, no other software required
- A no-code experience resulting in a fully managed datamart
- Automated performance tuning
- Built-in visual and SQL Query editor for ad-hoc analysis
- Support for SQL and other popular client tools
- Native integration with Power BI, Microsoft Office and other Microsoft analytics offerings
- Included with Power BI Premium capacities and Premium Per User
