Hello,
When using Power BI Desktop with a "service" account, I can get datasets from Power BI and refresh the content without any issue.
However, when publishing the report and updating the credentials, I cannot use these "service" account credentials: "ailed to update data source credentials: The credentials provided for the AnalysisServices source are invalid". Therefore, I don't think it's a permission issue.
However, when using my own credentials, it works fine. Nonetheless, I will not keep this solution as my enterprise policy requires me to change my password regularly, so I don't want to update all the Power BI credentials after changing my password.
The only difference I found so far is that I have the Microsoft 365 E5 and Office 365 E5 licenses, and the "service" account has Microsoft Power Automate Free and Power BI (free) licenses.
How can I configure the credentials to avoid updating all of them when I change my password?
Can I use the "service" account to achieve this goal?
Thanks!
HI @BlackBelt ,
The Service account is probably not working because it is not a Pro (or Premium) license. OR, you could have an issue with the need for a gateway (is your Analysis Services server local or cloud)?

Hi @collinq ,
Thank you for your help.
I don't think it is a gateway issue, otherwise my own credentials should fail too if I understood its purpose.
The dataset is in Power BI service, so in the cloud.
Dataset location:
According to you, it means that the "service" account needs to have either the Microsoft 365 E5 or Office 365 E5 license and it should work, shouldn't it?
Hey @BlackBelt ,
Thanks for your detailed response. It is my understanding that you have to have a Pro license to do anything that you are aksing about. For example:
"Users with free licenses can use the Power BI service to connect to data and create reports and dashboards for their own use. They can't use the Power BI sharing or collaborating features with others, or publish content to other people's workspaces."
and this for Pro
"Power BI Pro is an individual per-user license that lets users create content and also read, and interact with content that others have published to the Power BI service. Users with this license type can share content and collaborate with other Power BI Pro users. "

Hello @collinq,
Thanks again for your response and your valuable time to help me.
Giving this kind of license to a service account is not an appropriate solution, I will reach Microsoft to advice us for a recommanded practice.
