Clarification on Power BI Licensing: Pro, PPU, PPC – and Workspace Licensing

Hi Everyone,

I need some clarity regarding Power BI licensing, specifically around how different license types (Pro, PPU, PPC) relate to workspaces.

Questions:

  1. Is there any license specifically associated with Power BI workspaces?

  2. If I purchase a Power BI Pro license, what kind of license is applied to the workspaces I create or access?

  3. What are the differences in Pro, Premium Per User (PPU), and Premium Per Capacity (PPC) licenses affect:

    • Workspace creation and access

    • Report sharing and collaboration

    • Deployment to production environments

I would really appreciate a detailed explanation that can help me understand how licensing impacts workspace usage, and whether workspaces themselves require a separate license or are dependent on the license of the user or capacity.

    1. nnnnnyes?  There is a thing called PPU which is a chimera / hybrid mix

    2. this is largelyy unrelated . User licenses and workspace capacities are largely independent except for 1.

    3. In a nutshell you need to have a premium license to do anything destructive to a workspace (and you need to have a role above Viewer).

    Hi Anonymous ,

    Yes - Earlier When we created  a workspace, it was either assigned to Premium per capacity, or Premium Per user or Shared Worskspace (Free) 

    Now Power BI Premium Capacity is  MS Fabric FSKU where we can create Fabric resources in Azure and attach to a Worksapce F-SKU (Fabric Capacity) starting from F2 to F2048.

    FSKU 64 is equivalent to Premium Per Capacity

    I wanted to follow up on our previous discussion regarding Power BI licensing and the related questions you had about workspaces.

    As mentioned by earlier pallavi_r  when creating a workspace, it can be assigned to either Premium per capacity, Premium per user, or a Shared Workspace (Free). With the recent updates, Power BI Premium Capacity is now integrated with Microsoft Fabric, allowing you to create Fabric resources in Azure and link them to a Workspace F-SKU (Fabric Capacity) ranging from F2 to F2048.

      As previously highlighted by pallavi_r , when creating a workspace in Power BI, you can choose from three types: Premium per Capacity, Premium per User, or Shared (Free).

       

      With the latest updates, Power BI Premium Capacity is now fully integrated with Microsoft Fabric, enabling you to provision Fabric resources in Azure and associate them with a workspace using F-SKU capacities (ranging from F2 to F2048).

      As previously noted by ribisht17 pallavi_r  when setting up a workspace in Power BI, you have three main options to choose from:

       

      • Premium per Capacity
      • Premium per User
      • Shared (Free)

      With the recent updates, Power BI Premium Capacity is now deeply integrated with Microsoft Fabric. This means you can now provision Fabric resources via Azure and assign them to your workspaces using F-SKU capacities (ranging from F2 to F2048), giving you greater flexibility and scalability.
