Cannot publish to different workspace/app using PowerBI dataset

Hi,

I have a report which is published to several PowerBI workspaces/apps but it is customized on the needs of the department so the report name is different from each app though using the same data source(table).  Because the table has huge amount of data so I used PowerBI dataset as my data source on other apps (Eg. App B,C,D) while in the main app (eg. App A) is the table itself.  The problem is I could not publish those reports to app B,C,D because every time I publish, PowerBI Desktop does not prompt me what app to publish it.  It automatically and directly publishes to main app (App A).

HEre are the steps which I already did:

- upgraded the workspace

- the direct query option is enabled under Preview feature in Option setting

- uninstalled/reinstalled PowerBI desktop

Hi @v-easonf-msft , I can publish now to other workspaces/apps.  I just have to go to Transform Data > Data source settings > select the power bi dataset > create > save and publish.  It's like recreating the powerbi dataset that I have already added previously.  It works now, I can publish it to other workspaces but my new problem is it won't overwrite the existing report hence it creates new one so it's like there are 2 reports with same name.

Hi, @summer18

Sorry, I was a little confused by your description.

If the report with a existing name is published to service, the following prompt should pop up on PowerBI Desktop.

Can you share a related screenshot about the 2 reports (in Service) ?

Please check whether these reports have different datasets.

Hi, @summer18

Please check whether the option 'Use datasets across workspaces' is enabled for the entire organization in Admin Portal.

I think there is confusion here.

You can only publish to one app from one workspace.

Workspace to app is 1:1. you cannot publish your various reports to different apps from the same workspace.

hi @summer18 - Ideally will prompt you on which workspace you want to publish the report. But as pointed out by @collinq this could be happening if you do not have access to the other workspaces.

But from your initial post it seems like you are the one who published the copies of the reports - was any form of security changed on workspaces B, C & D after the intial set of reports were published?

Can you share a screenshot of what you see when you are publishing the reports which are connected via Power BI datasets to the dataset in workspace A (App A)

Happy to help!

HI @summer18 ,

This appears to me to be a permissions issue - do you have permissions in the other apps to publish to them?  When you hit "publish" in Desktop you see the whole list of Workspaces that you have permissions to publish to - and if you are not seeing those then you probably don't have permissions to them.

Hi @collinq @Sumanth_23 ,  yes I have access.  I am one of the admin owners of all those workspaces.  When I tried to publish, aside from there's no prompt what app I want to publish it, publishing is like the normal/regular way of publishing a report then another prompt window that it has been successfully published.  I asked my colleague who is also one of the admins, it's the same scenario.  We don't know what we're missing.

hi @summer18 - I have not seen this behavior while working with Power BI. Can you try another thing - after you publish all reports to workspace A, can you try to "save a copy" of the reports B, C & D to their respective app worksapces.

Can you confirm if you are able to publish the reports to their respective workspaces using this approach. Thanks!
