@Amarnath There are two types.

Personal

On premises Data Gateway

 

The gateways are required to refresh data or keep connections open to access your on premises data. There are some exceptions, but read those articles and post any additional questions you may have.

Think of them as a Mid Server that sits inside your company network and provides a secure, trusted, link between your data and the cloud.  Without them, the Cloud wouldn't know how to connect and get through all of the various firewalls, internal IP addresses and the like.
