Azure permissions/roles to the sync account used by Power BI Gateway

I use Power BI Gateway to connect Power BI service with internal resources for updates.

Articles state that this gateway requires an account on Azure with the Global Admin role.

It's working fine, but customer keeps asking if such a high level of permissions on Azure is actually required for the data gateway.

Install on-premises data gateway for Azure Logic Apps

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/logic-apps/logic-apps-gateway-install

"... You need to sign in with either a work account or school account, also known as an organization account, which looks like username@contoso.com..."

"... The Azure AD Global administrator role (which includes Office 365 Global admins) and Power BI service administrators will be able to see all gateways in their organizations in addition to the gateways they manage...."

Has anyone ever setup and used Data Gateway with an account *without* the Global Admin role? If this works, which was the role used?

Hi @Anonymous ,

You need to setup and used Data Gateway with an account of the Global Admin role.

Hi there

I certainly have installed and configured Gateways where I do not have a Global Admin permissions and it works perfectly fine.

I think what the article is trying to say is that your Global Admin's will be needed if you want to view all the Gateway's installed for an organization.
