Assistance with Global Model Slicer Setup Across Power BI Reports in Power Apps

Hello everyone,

I’m looking to implement a global model slicer that would allow a filter applied in one Power BI report (via Power Apps) to automatically apply or reset across other reports in the same workspace within a Power BI app. The slicer should function solely as a slicer, without using cross-report drill-through filters, as users need to drill through repeatedly.

If anyone has insights on how to achieve this, I’d appreciate the help. A colleague mentioned this is possible through Power Apps, but I’m still working out the details.

Thank you,
Andrei

Hi Andrei06

That is an interesting experiment for sure. I suppose it could work.

You will need to create a table in a Data Source of your choice, for each Column that you need to filter.

In your Semantic Model, you will relate each of these tables, to the respective column in your global model.

Next you create a Power App to be embedded in Power BI. I've written a number of blogs on this topic (Guide: Add Write-Back to Power BI reports with Power Apps – Part 2: Display write-back data LIVE in ...).

Essentially, you'll want to connect your Power App to all of the tables that you created in the first step. Then, design an interface which allows your users to choose between and persist filter values in said tables.

Finally, you add a Power Apps for Power BI visualisation in your Power BI Reports, and point it to your Power App, allowing your users to set the filter values from within Power BI.

If these filters are supposed to be individual to each user, you will have a further step of setting up Row Level Security on the Filter Tables, so that only the user's own values reach the semantic model and filters it.

Not an easy task, but I could see it work.
