Can I get this to update the data automatlic like the App? I can't see how I can do this in the Desktop version.

Yes, and I do not believe that you will need a gateway. Basically, you create your PBIX file and then upload it to Power BI Service. Once there, the Service will refresh the data set that is created when you upload your PBIX file.
