unable to publish to report server form power bi desktop

Hello all. I am testing an on premise report server (customer will have internal access to the report server, no internet access). I have built it on a 2012 r2 server with SQL server 2012. The goal is for me/client to run power bi desktop, and be able to upload reports to the report server. Additionally, we would like other users to be able to view the reports via internal website (but not make changes themselves).

I have configured report service service and its running properly, and if I go to my report page it shows a blank page with (localhot)/ReportServer and underneath it says Microsoft Report Server 15.x.x.x. It is blank I assume because I have not published to it yet, but the server and site are running.

In power bi desktop, I sign in (premium trial account), and in the save menu, I have the option to publish to power bi report server. I click on it, and it says to select my power bi report server. I enter the report server location (its running on the same box) so I put http://(localhost):88/ReportServer, which is the same web url I can http to. I get an error that says "we couldnt find a power bi re port server at this address". I cannot get past this.

Any idea why I cant post to the report server, which is running on the same server? This is a sanbox / proof of concept system so I may not have whats needed (licensing?) but I just need to verify what is required, and why its not working for me. Would appreciate any help, thank you.

Most of the time i can clear difference between Tableau community and powerbi community, as in tableau you can find the answers to your question or no answer at all, but in powerbi community you will find answer not even related to the post, are they real human who answers like that or just AI model training themselves.

now i got it, it just human will something to earn these batches🤣

Try using this URL to connect to the server:

http://(localhost):88/reports

Thank you, I have tried http://(localhost):88/reports but it does not work

my current report server url is http://(localhost):88/reportserver and I get the same error when I try to publish to this address. I can however http to that address.

Any other thoughts?

The /reportserver URL will not work for PBI reports you have to use /reports. Can you navigate to this address (http://(localhost):88/reports) in the browser, you should see the PBIRS portal? If you see the portal can you try to save the report to disk and then upload it in the Portal UI? Lastly if you can't see the portal it is likely a URL reservation issue, open the RS config tool and let me know what you have reservered for the portal URL and Report Server URL. Thanks!

Hi @gtsureview,

I would highly suggest to download the report server from the link below and try publishing power BI reports.

https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/report-server/

You may require PBI Desktop report server version as well to author your PBI Reports.

Thanks & Regards,
Bhavesh

@BhaveshPatel

Thank you for the reply. Sorry if I didnt make that clear, but yes I have installed power bi report server (on premise). In my OP when I mentioned report server web page that I can go to that is blank, that is power bi report server running.

I wish I could attach screenshots here to show whats happening.

Hi @gtsureview ,

I remeber that you can only put a "." (only the dot icon = that mean localhost) into the adress line and it should work. I'm not sure if this still is working but give it a try 😁

If this is not working I use my ReportServer name like: http://myvm/Reports

myvm=servername

Check if https is maybe the problem...

Best,

Kathrin
