does power BI Report server need domain?

Hi,

I am working for a client who has not configured domain on their network but want to use the Workgroup settings only. Can someone tell me if PBIRS necessarily needs a domain and the subsequent authentication?

If not, in case of Workgroup settings, how do users publish their report to the server located on a peer network?

(I have installed Power BI Desktop on my own machine, which is connected to the peer network but when I try to publish a report from my PBI Desktop to the PBIRS, i just get an error stating that an error is encountered.

I looked online and someone had suggested that Power BI Desktop automatically sends the logged in credentials to the PBIRS which it is not able to authenticate in this case as the Power BI desktop is in my local machine and not on the server where PBIRS is installed. And the proposed solution was setting up kerberos which is not possible in my case as I am not working on a domain.Hence, my question.)
