We're not able to upload this report. The report was created with a recent version of Power BI Deskt

I have no idéa whats going on.

We are running the latest verion of PowerBi report server (15.0.1111.115) and PowerBi desktop (2.114.664.0 64-bit (februari 2023))

The problem is that you are trying to publish to Report Server with the wrong version of Desktop. Every version of Report Server has a matching version of Desktop that you should use to avoid this error. There is a downloads link in the top right corner of the Report Server Portal which links to the correct version of desktop to use with that Server.

I have some suggestions here as to how you might be able to get these reports working in Report Server https://darren.gosbell.com/2022/10/power-bi-report-server-fixing-cant-upload-this-report/

This issue has been fixed in the Sept 2024 release so updating to that will allow you to safely use DAX Query View

Great news. Thanks!

I found a solution of you actually have both report server and power bi report server on the same version for exxample (May 2024) and you still have the problem , here's the solution.

I have 2 dashboards one works when I upload and the other gives me the error for example :

main dashboard (gives error when uploading)
secondey dashboard (works like a charm with no problems)

what you have to do is :

1. change the extention of both pbix files to zip files ( dont compress them just rename each one to main dashboad.zip and secondery dashboard.zip)

2. open secondery dashboard.zip (the no problem dashboard) take the version file from it and put it in the dekstop

3. open the main dashboard.zip ( the one that has a problem) delete the version file from it

4. drag the version file from the dekstop into the main dashboard.zip

5. rename the main dashboard.zip to main dashboard.pbix

6. now try uploading it and it should work

Your suggestion works!! Fixed my issues for PBIRS May 2024 (I had May 2025 installed). Your instructions with screenshots and slightly tweaked:

  1. Change the extension of both pbix files, by adding .zip at the end of the file name (make sure you have “show extensions” turned on in file explorer)
  2. open no-issue dashboard.zip (the no problem dashboard) take the version file from it and put it in the dekstop
  3. open the error dashboard.zip
  4. drag the version file from the dekstop into the main dashboard.zip : REPLACE
  5. rename the main dashboard.zip back to zzzz.pbix
  6. Screenshot 2025-06-23 101439.pngScreenshot 2025-06-23 101339.png

Note: Sadly, it only works for that one upload. If you then open and edit / save in PBIRS after this, you will need to do the zip fix AGAIN before uploading. Doh! 🙄

I had the same issue, and I am now able to recreate it for my specific case.

Like @JulienCrambes , I too have confirmed version May 2024 on both the report server and my local PBI desktop.

Only 1 of my reports was giving this error, and all my reports were created with May 2024 PBI desktop. Turns out I had used a particular new feature - the DAX Query Analyzer - in the report with the error.

To recreate the issue:

  • Open any report
  • Go to the DAX Query Analyzer
  • Right-click on a table in the Data Window
  • Choose "Quick Queries" >> "Define all measures in this model"
  • Save and try to upload the report to the servertallison_0-1727974255012.png

I have deleted the new tab in the DAX Query Editor, but I have not yet figured out how to get the report back to a state where it can be uploaded to the server.

So, I cannot fix the issue, but I can prevent it in the future. I will update this thread if I figure out how to get PBI to "forget" that I created the DAX query.

I have that issue too except I have already verified the version of pbi desktop in the report's metadata (may 2024) against that of the report server (may 2024). Other reports work well, only one is throwing this error with seemingly no reason.

I have the same problem since the lastest release. I tried all options/solutions given here and other places, it simply do not work. What I don't get is that MS can release a PowerBI desktop version that is not supported by the latest PowerBI reportserver (january 2024).

Can someone change the resolution from 'Resolved' to 'Not resolved' ? The solution provided by one of the users is incorrect and doesn't work. We all have the same issue, but looks like there is no resolution. Hope someone from Microsoft reads this and provides us a resolution / fix to this issue.

I have tried exactly what you suggested above by downloaded the version suggested by the Report Server Download link and not the 32bit version of POWERBI Desktop RS nor the 64 bit version works. I still cannot upload the new file still get the same error. “Cant upload this report. Were unable to upload this report. The report was created with a recent version of PowerBI Desktop that is not yet supported by this server” Running Windows 11, The suggested PowerBI version was POWERBI DESKTOP RS May 2023 Any other ideas?

I am facing the same issue. Trying to upload a BI report with May2023 version, but to no avail. I am getting the same error : "We're not able to upload this report. The report was created with a recent version of Power BI Desktop that is not yet supported by this server" . Any idea on what this issue is  or any workaround/solution  ?
