Power BI Desktop/Report Server

Hello,

My company has 2 customers who have different types of Power BI licenses: 1 has Power BI Service and another has Power BI Report Server. As such, we have to build the reports in the 2 different softwares, one with the Power BI Desktop and the other with the Power BI optimized for the Report Server. Since the reports are the same (only the datasources change), is there any way to take advantage of the work done in the Power BI Desktop for the Power BI Report Server?

Best regards,

Guilherme Bernardo

Yes, build your reports only in Power BI Desktop RS ("Power BI Desktop (optimized for Power BI Report Server)").

This version is compatibile with both solutions, cloud "Power BI Service" and on-premise "Power BI Report Server", and is possible "save" report to "Power BI Report Server" and also "publish" to "Power BI Service" from single Desktop application.

Only in case when you need add some unique special features provided only by cloud service (like Machine Learning functions) use "Power BI Desktop" which is limited on to cloud service. Good way is use same month release (e.g. "Power BI Desktop RS October 2020" side by side with "Power BI Desktop October 2020"), which allows re-open .pbix in both application with minimum compatibility issues.
