PBIRS with Custom Authentication in Non-Domain Environment

Due to various operational constraints, our Power BI Report Server (PBIRS) has to be deployed in a non-domain environment. The Windows authentication mechanism in PBIRS has proven to be very cumbersome. Specifically, when the webpage loads, the call to the `api/v2.0/me` endpoint consistently takes 6-7 seconds to complete, which severely degrades the user experience. Additionally, we've encountered a critical issue: Power BI Desktop and the Power BI mobile app are unable to connect to the report server via the REST API when Custom Authentication is enabled. This has been a long-standing problem that has significantly impacted our daily workflow. We sincerely hope the official team can prioritize and optimize this as soon as possible. It would be greatly appreciated if compatibility with Power BI Desktop and the Power BI app under Custom Authentication could be added in a future update. Without this improvement, our daily work will remain very inconvenient, which is truly disappointing. Looking forward to your timely updates.

    Hi Cyril_Rodriguez
Thank you for contacting the Microsoft Fabric community forum.

We understand the challenges of operating Power BI Report Server in a non-domain environment. Currently, PBIRS does not offer full functionality with Custom Authentication, and features like Power BI Desktop, the mobile app, and some REST API operations require Windows Authentication, making them incompatible with custom authentication providers. The performance delay you’re experiencing is a known issue related to authentication outside a domain setup, and there is no official roadmap for Custom Authentication support for these clients yet. If this feature is essential for you, as tayloramy suggested submit your request to the Power BI Ideas forum. If the idea receives sufficient community support and upvotes, it may be considered by the product group for inclusion in a future update.

If you have any further questions, please let us know and we’ll be happy to help.

    Best Regards,

    Microsoft Fabric Community Support Team.
