PBIRS Authentication issue

We have two servers in current case. Server A is holding all users AD account and Server B has Power BI Report Server installed. We joined the domain from Server B to Server A. All went well. We can create the own user group in Server B and we can assign the users from Server A into the user group in Server B. When we access to the Power BI portal, we have some issues.

• As we are testing to use Server A user to login to Server B Power BI report server portal. The login is successful but there are no details in the portal interface and only one message said “Service is not available. Could not connect to the server. Please check your network settings and try again later.". It works fine for our local user account created in Server B Power BI. It mentioned something authenticate issue. After that, I checked the rsreportserver.config file. The AuthenticationType is <RSWindowsBasic />.  

• Next, I changed/add the The AuthenticationType is <RSWindowsNTLM />. There is totally different result. we are testing to use Server A user to login to Server B Power BI report server portal. We can access to the portal and can see the files and folders are existing in the interface. Also, I set up the security to make sure my testing account can only view one folder.  It is working but there are an error message: “Received a request with an unmatched or no authentication scheme.” when I click any dashboard files. However, I checked the log file “RSPortal_....”. It mentioned something authenticate issue. After that, I checked the rsreportserver.config file. Even I use the local user got the same issue as well.

On the other hand, I have another question. Originally, we setup as local admin account as Service Account and the SQL server connect If I joined the domain. Do I need to change from my local admin account to the service account to the AD domain Administrator Account (Server A Admin)?

Could you explain more and how I apply this to my current situation? I did change the Authentication Type to <RSWindowsNTLM />. 

For now, the domain controller is Server A. A is holding all user account information and got the policy setup. We have installed Power BI Report Server in Server B. We would like to use the same AD login credentials in Server A for Server B, especially the username and password. So we cannot export the user list from Server A and import them to Server B since passwords are encrypted.

We use “Join domain” method. We configure Server B to join Server A domain. So that I can create the local group in Server B and add the AD users from Server A in it. It also our ideal result and all working.

However, there is an issue. When we click manage of the Power BI report or open the Power BI report in Power BI Report Server, a message box appear, “An error has occurred. Something went wrong. Please try again later.” And nothing else showing and keep loading.

What can I do next?

Hi @garyY7 ,

Please use a domain controller for unified management of domain users.

<RSWindowsNTLM> is the default authentication type.
