Newer version error, though not really new!

Hi

We have a PBI RS (Currently Version 1.20.8944.34536 - May 2024) and use Desktop RS (Version 2.129.1127.0 64-bit - May 2024) to develop reports. Everything was working fine until yesterday, when I faced this error uploading reports to RS via portal:

There was an error uploading your .pbix file. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.

Saving from Desktop RS gives me this error:

An error occurred while attempting to save the report to Power BI Report Server.

RSPowerBI log says:

2024-07-09 06:59:17.6734|ERROR|43|Failure in reportproperties| RequestID = s_7c9d4b6f-ff31-489d-968b-8f66dde94b17 Microsoft.PowerBI.Packaging.Storage.NewerFileVersionException: '1.31' is newer than the product version.

I download latest version of RS from MS website and attempted to upgrade (the above-mentioned version) with no luck. We haven't had updated our Desktop RS app recently. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

By default the May 2024 version of Desktop for RS will create files with a version of 1.28, but I think you also need to remove the "DAX Queries" folder from inside the pbix file to stop desktop from resetting the version to 1.31

Do you know if you used the new DAX Query View feature? This seems to be triggering a file version update that the server is not expecting. You might need to log a support ticket with Microsoft to get this investigated.

I used HxD hex editor and altered Version file to show 1.30 instead of 1.31 and now RS accepts file with absolutely no problem. The only issue remaining is when I open file using Desktop RS and save it, it reverts to 1.31 and I have to mangle Version file each time I want to upload it. But I want to thank you for your idea which led to solution to my problem 🙏

I had exactly the same issue. And it's been resolved by removing the DAX Queries folder.

Many many thanks! You are a genius! I removed "DAX Queries" folder and when saved file, it reverted version back to 1.28!

Thanks for your response. Yes, we used DAX Query View once (just for test). How can I undo changes caused by this feature? We are using developer version and don't have a pro license to log a support ticket 😞
