Everytime I change my password, I have to reupdate my password to connect to the files that are on shared drive. However I keep getting this error. Can someone please help?

Hi @homboy27

This error appears because when your Windows (Active Directory) password changes, any connections to file-based data sources (like shared drives) in Power BI Service also require their stored credentials to be updated in your Manage Connections and Gateways section. If not, Power BI can’t access the files using your new credentials.

But sometimes after updating the password, this error still shows up due to cached or old credentials lingering behind.
Please do follow the below steps to resolve the issue:

  1. Go to Power BI Service → Settings → Manage Connections and Gateways.

  2. Find your connection under Connections.

  3. Click Edit Credentials.

  4. Re-enter your updated network (domain) username and new password.

  5. Make sure Authentication method is set correctly (typically Windows for shared drives).

  6. Save the connection.

If it still fails:

  • Remove the connection entirely and re-create it fresh with the new credentials.

  • Confirm that your gateway is online and you’re mapped to the correct Gateway Cluster.

If the above information is helpful, please give us Kudos and mark the response as Accepted as solution.

See Below screenshot. Only Option I see if "windows without impersonation". This is a file I am trying to use from a shared drive and I had to reupdate my password yesterday but it is still not connecting. What am I doing wrong?
