data type change

is there a facility in PowerBI to change column format, for example character to date, numeric to character, etc etc

Yes. You can select the column you want the format to be changed for and select from the provided dropdown in the panel.

@chengim_khaw Power BI Web service have very limited custom features but Desktop tool do have more features for customization.

Yes, there a number of ways, initial download- you can edit/format  the data fields. And when you're working on the reports too.
